Artist Statement
My work sits across functional ceramics, sculpture, and time-based installations. Drawing from a multidisciplinary background spanning traditional handicrafts, digital fabrication, and projection mapping, I explore the tension between function and expression. Familiar objects and vessel forms are transformed into ambiguous hybrid organisms and temporal experiences, disrupting conventional expectations of ceramics as a medium of containment, utility, and permanence.
My practice embraces experimentation, irony, and chance. Unexpected glaze interactions, collapse, perforation, breakage, repair, and adaptation become generative processes through which forms evolve beyond their intended functions. I extend ceramics beyond its physical boundaries. Projected light serves as a transient glaze, activating unglazed surfaces without permanently altering them. Rather than existing as fixed objects or installations, I also invite adaptation or reconfiguration over time. These material transformations and immaterial interventions allow familiar forms to become systems, experiences, and evolving relationships between object, viewer, and time.
Bio
Janet Jeun-Gourley is a multidisciplinary artist whose experimental practice centers on ceramics. Born in Seoul, South Korea, and raised in Queens, New York, she currently lives with her family in Jersey City, New Jersey. She holds a BA in English from Bryn Mawr College.
Her sculptural work has been exhibited in galleries and group exhibitions and is held in private collections. Interactive installations and projection-based works have been presented at the Vault Allure Experience Festival, JCAST Exhibition Headquarters, and Garden State Art Weekend at Project Studios.
Janet is the founder of GAM Ceramics, an independent ceramic studio and gallery in Jersey City. Through functional and sculptural ceramics alongside interdisciplinary installations, she continues to investigate ceramics as a material, cultural, and experiential practice.
